"Kirstin is the kind of woman other women love to hate- until
you meet her"- so reads the headline of a magazine that
featured me on its cover and in an article, inside its pages. I
have long been a proponent of shattering the stigma
attached to many of us that enjoy pageantry- that talent,
intellect, attractiveness and substance cannot coexist in the
same person. That somehow, women must trade one "gift"
for the other. I'm proud to claim that mine is a personal
pageant success story- my competition experiences have
afforded me more than $30000 in scholarships without which
I'd never have been able to achieve my dream of earning my
doctoral degree.

At the same time, pageants have provided the forum for me
to hone my communication skills, earn an executive position
in a male-dominated industry for one of the nation's most
powerful Governors, develop the skills to lead organizations
whose mission it is to assist women and children in reaching
their potential, and a chance to pick up my fiddle to entertain
anyone who'll listen (usually, my son is a willing audience,
though the dogs run and hide!).  For the link to an article
about women in politics,

None of this is possible, of course, without the selfless
support of my husband and family, who share my dream of
becoming a national titleholder. They believe in me and my
message of encouraging and inspiring others to reach their
full potential- to accept, acknowledge and nurture the
unique gifts with which we've each been blessed and the
answer the call to reach out to those who need our support.
September 11, 2002-at the 911 Memorial Event
honoring the fallen Heroes of Flight 93. I
volunteered by managing over 700 members of
the  media in attendance to cover this global
event in Shanksville, PA.  I'm talking with
Homeland Security Director,
& former Governor,
Tom Ridge.
